I love the idea of blending different mediums and genres to create a story that is epic and stunning, and I have a very good feeling about the upcoming Film Sucker Punch.
Sucker Punch is a vivid fantasy which takes us into the imagination of a girl trapped in a mental institution. She creates a parallel fantasy world to escape her dark reality. Amongst the highlights of the trailer are robot demon samurais, a dragon battling a B-52 bomber, A bunny theme mecha, and Nazi orcs. It’s like a badass Alice in wonderland on steroids.

As we get closer to this films release, I hope it does well and turns out to be as good as it looks. I’ve read that the heroine of the story “Babydoll” is in danger of getting a lobotomy. This has the potential to become very dark very easily. Pan’s Labyrinth was an awesome movie with a similar theme to Sucker Punch. A young girl, Ofelia, enters a fantasy world to escape her harsh reality. The ending of Pan’s Labyrinth (spoiler) leaves it to the audience’s imagination whether Ofelia escaped to her fantasy world or simply had a dream as she died. It was a bittersweet ending because even though Ofelia dies, she grew and a character and was able to protect her baby brother. In the tradition of Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan, the dream worlds that the children venture into often teach them a life lesson. I hope whatever happens in Sucker Punch, Babydoll ends up learning something about life, and is able to escape.
