Nerd Rage: Wonder Woman’s TV Costume

Wonder Woman is a superhero with alot of underutilized potential. The new series helmed by David E. Kelly originally seemed like it might be a serious interpretation of the character but every little bit of information I read about the series makes me facepalm harder and harder. Instead of being a strong heroine, the series seems like it will be Allie McBeal with superpowers, who fights crime, argues from a political soapbox, whines about her bust size, and is hung up on Steve Trevor. With the casting of  Adrianne Palicki as the titular character I figured she’s tall and strong looking. She will at least resemble the part. They’ve recently released some promotional images of the costume. Pardon me while I face palm even more.

I think I hate this costume as much as the Superman Returns suit. Superheroes as a rule have silly costumes but they can be made to work in live action.  It’s too big of a departure from what has been a mainstay of the comic books forever. Wonder Woman is a hero appointed by the Greek Gods to protect the world.  She should have some type of Grecian armor shouldn’t she? There are no elements that resemble anything remotely Greek. It’s cheap and fake looking. The stretchy, shiny, clothes that seem to be there to only ornament her body. This version of Wonder Woman looks like a hooker.

The pictures release of the costume in action is better. The deeper less shiney blue and the boots help ballace out the collor sceme but it still looks uninspired. Every Batman movie (even those including bat-nipples) did something interesting if not misguided with a boring grey stretch suit, cowl, and cape. The stretchpants and red leather halter top only say “look at me I’ve got a hot body!”  I have no problem with a superhero showing off their physique, but a costume should say “look at me I’ve got a hot body, I’m badass, and will save the day.” Their costumes should at least look logical to fight in. Spider-Man wears spandex because he’s an acrobat. Superman wears spandex because nothing can hurt him. Unlike Superman, Wonder Woman isn’t invulnerable. She regenerates, like Wolverine. Shouldn’t she want something a little more protective incase she does get hit.  If nothing else should she want to wear something a little less silly. She’s an ambassador after all. It’s kinda sad to think Smallville had a better Wonder Woman suit as a gag when Lois Lane dressed as an Amazon for ComicCon.
