Review: Chronicles of Mayre #0

Mayre

I’m always excited when a young artists and writers start making original work available. A friend of mine directed me to Coat of Arms Comics, a Long Island based indie comic book company. Recently I had the pleasure of reading their first comic the Chronicles of Mayre #0, a high fantasy adventure.

Chronicles of Mayre #0 brings us to the world of Rhain, a magical Planet filled with fascinating creatures. Ruled by despotic dragons and their elite magical enforcers the Maghim, most races, including human beings, are kept enslaved. The most importing thing about “issue # 0” comic books is to set the stage and entice the readers into wanting more. In that regard Chronicles of Mayre #0 is a success. The world of Rhain is built from the cosmic level down. We see everything from the creation of the universe,  to the elder gods shaping that universe, and finally the origin of the fantasy species, all illustrated beautifully in the style of a stained glass window. Mayre’s colorful and stunning artwork helps weave together the feeling of an epic fantasy world, capable of many gripping stories. With potential plots surrounding floating cities of the giants, or dwarves turned into unfeeling stone constructs, it lets the reader know what imaginative locals, or thrilling conflicts might be in store for us. When we are introduced to our hero Wolfgang Von Harsack, (for the record a character whose name I find totally badass) we see the trials that ordinary people are forced to endure under the corrupt police police powers of The Maghim. There are definite notes of fascist dictatorship, complete with genocides, secret police, labeling minorities, and slavery.  Beaten, hung and left for dead where will Wolfgang’s journey take him? The character is someone with a dark past. Will he rise to become a hero, or fall to rage and vengeance? Only future issues of Chronicles of Mayre will tell.

With over 30 pages of stunning artwork, for around $4 Chronicles of Mayre #0 makes for a great value. If anyone wants more information or to check out the 8 page preview click over to Coat of Arms’ website or go to IndyPlanet to purchase.
