Review: Smallville “Fortune”

Now that Smallville has clawed itself away from the dismal “Vigilante Registration Act” plot line, it’s time for a little fun. This episode was filler. There was no connection to continuing plot lines surround Darkseid, Connor Kent, or even the omega branded on Oliver Queen’s skull. On top of that Fortune was a blatant rip off of the movie the Hangover. Despite all that, I didn’t mind. This was the first episode of Smallville in a while that was fun, and not bogged down with melodrama or straw man politics.

The gang, Lois, Clark, Chloe, Oliver, Tess, and Emile decide to have a night out together to celebrate the super-couple’s impending nuptials. As they toast Lois and Clark’s happiness as the limo arrives. The scene then cuts to the next morning as Chloe and Clark wake up without any memory of the night before, and Clark’s house filled with  random items. It turns out that the bottle of champagne had been enchanted by none other than Zatanna, allowing even our resident Kryptonian to become intoxicated. As our characters tries to remember what happened the night before we see plenty of fallout from drunken highjinx. Emil becomes an overnight sensation as an Elvis impersonator. Chloe worries she’s married Clark. Lois bets her wedding ring in a game of black jack, and she and Oliver have to pose as show girls to get it back. All while stumbling into the crimes of a crooked casino operator.

What was enjoyable about this episode is we get to see the characters in a relaxed light. Smallville has always taken itself particularly seriously. Clark’s crush on Lana in the early seasons is treated with the same level of gravity as the end of the world. The first time Lois kisses Clark she goes into a coma. The general rule with Smallville, (as with most CW dramas) is to make the characters as hyperbolicaly dysfunctional as possible. In this case we get to see our heroes as humans capable of humor. Though this was an awkward place to give us a humorous filler episode, with a super powered Lex clone running around. I guess I can wait until the next episode for that hanging plot to resolve itself. Maybe this is the quiet before the storm

On a Scale of 1 to Epic, (Epic equals 10) I’d give it a 7.0
