Review: Supernatural: “The French Mistake”

Supernatural has had so many hanging plot threads throughout the season  and waisted quite a few episodes on filler. One of the ones I’ve felt was woefully underdeveloped as the angel’s ongoing civil war for control of heaven.  I know Castiel has been loosing, and we’ve now gotten an update, in the form of a comedy. Strangely enough if works.

When Balthazar arrives at Bobby’s house in a panic, he hastily starts casting a spell. Apparently Raphael is killing all of Castiel’s allies. Balthazar gives them a key to the vault of heavens weapons. He wants to send them some place safe, when Virgil heaven’s weapons keeper and hitman arrives. Balthazar throws them through a wall and they end up on a television production set. The brothers find themselves in the rolls of the actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles portraying the Winchester Brothers on Supernatural the TV show. In a world without magic or the supernatural the brothers, debate the whether this world is better than theirs. They’re a bit out of place now that they’re rich and don’t know their lines, but they still try to get back home, figuring that there they can make a difference. The only problem is that Virgil has followed him here. Though he lacks his powers he’s still a  formidable warrior and proceeds to massacre the production crew of Supernatural. It turns out that this entire universe hoping adventure was to divert Raphael’s attention so Cass can get his hands on heaven’s arsenal. Now he has a chance in the war.

First on the list of things to note about this episode was the humor. Supernatural has made fun of itself before but its usually at the fans expense.  This time it was the TV industry as the but of the joke. Though the joke’s were a bit cliche teasing the superficiality and extravagance of show biz they made me chuckle, particularly Jared’s pet emu. I enjoyed Virgil as an enemy this episode. He was creepy and intimidating. As an angel in a universe where heaven and hell don’t exist, he became a murderer with an existential outlook on the world. His speech about people only being sacks of flesh animated by strings a pulleys was very harsh. He may be stuck in the other world I just hope he comes back to be a recurring villain.

I would like to figure out what the theological implications are of God creating the brothers universe, but a parallel universe exists without God in it. Did God create the multiverse or re there counterparts to God. Is one more of a watch maker who wound things up and than took a step back, and the other more of the old testament style. Maybe I’m thinking too hard. Anyway now that we’ve updated the war in heaven, lets find out what the Mother of All is up too.

On a Scale of 1 to Epic, (Epic equals 10) I’d give it a 7.2
